GoTranscript Review: Surprisingly Good

I've had some experience with doing transcription jobs in the past and I thought it would be fun to review GoTranscript for others with transcription skills and a need for extra cash.

So, this is my GoTranscript review using Payoneer as a payment method, where I'll share a few tips and explain how it works.

I was introduced to GoTranscript a few weeks ago. In short, they're an an online-only transcription company that lets you work on transcription jobs from the comfort of your home. Living the dream, as they say.

Because it's remote transcription work only, you get paid every week through Payoneer or PayPal, whichever you prefer. All you really need is fast typing skills, good spelling and grammar, and a dash of patience.

Are you a client looking for legit GoTranscript reviews? Because I have worked with them, I can personally vouch that GoTranscript is safe, trustworthy, and not a scam. Go ahead and sign up at the GoTranscript Client page. No need to read further.

Review of What GoTranscript Offers You as a Transcriber

For anyone who has not done audio transcription before, GoTranscript makes it easy to get started and earn real money online right away. Here is a breakdown of the process from applying to earning to getting paid.

GoTranscript Review with Payoneer

How it works: First, you must sign up at GoTranscript.com with your email, username, and password. You will be granted a standard user account which looks similar to what the client sees. I was confused by this at first, but when you have confirmed your account you will be able to apply to become a transcriber.

The application process is simple and straightforward. You will be given a very short quiz with basic questions on the GoTranscript guidelines. Consider this an 'open book' test, because you are allowed (and encouraged) to read through the guidelines document at least once before answering any of the questions.

When you have completed the test - it's super easy - you will be asked to transcribe a short test piece of audio of around 2 minutes. This task is a bit harder and I assume that there are multiple test samples to prevent cheaters, so do not think you can cheat your way through.

If you are any good at using your ears, GoTranscript's test will be a breeze. Relax and do the best you can. Remember that you will be assessed on how well you follow the guidelines.

For example, if the speaker mentions the title of a book, movie, or play, you must type those words in Italics. Basic things like that may cause you to fail the test, so be careful.

When you have successfully passed the test, you may have to wait a few days to get on board. Be patient. For me, it only took 3 days to get approved. Yay!

What you get as a transcriber: Okay, so once you are approved, you will get access to the part of the GoTranscript site that lets you find transcription jobs, see your stats, and request your payments.

Here are a few cool things about the site and overall transcribing workflow:

  • A huge list of transcription jobs that are ready to be worked on. You just click "Make my Job" and it will be reserved for you. You have 6 hours to complete any job up to 10 minutes long. Most jobs will earn you $2 to $3 for 10 minutes of audio, but there are often higher paying jobs available.

  • An anonymized leaderboard that shows you how much money the top transcribers have made in the current week. Great for motivating yourself to work harder.

  • A web-based transcription tool that makes it easy to transcribe what you work on. It has all the features you need, like shortcut keys for Pause/Play (Esc), Rewind (F1), Forward (F2), and other handy text templates. You can also integrate any footpedal that is compatible with NCH Software's ExpressScribe.

  • YouTube previews of jobs so you can quickly decide if you want to take it or not.

  • Editor ratings and comments about how you did on each job. After every finished job, you can see exactly what your editor changed in your original transcription. This is very useful for improvement.

  • Helpful admin comments to ensure that you know the client's particular requirements. They will often tell you the names or terms used, which helps to get them right in the transcription.

Despite all these features, one of the top reasons I enjoy working online at GoTranscript is that the editors who've handled my work have been both kind and supportive. This is important because both beginners and experts tend to give up rather than improve if subjected to unfair criticism.

Do you have what it takes to be a good transcriber and keep the editors happy?

Then you should sign up as a transcriber now.

If you're not that good at first, keep trying and you will improve. Time-wise, if it takes you more than 3 hours to finish a 10 minute recording, flex those fingers and start building your typing speed immediately.

Tip: An excellent online game to increase typing speed is TypeRacer. I improved my typing speed from 60 WPM up to 90-100 WPM after playing TypeRacer for a while. It helps.

How do GoTranscript's Payoneer Payments Work?

GoTranscript.com is an international transcription company and pay you every week, reliably. You can live in any country in the world and work with GoTranscript: Philippines, Kenya, Australia, USA, UK, Canada, wherever you are. For countries without local PayPal withdrawal options, GoTranscript offers Payoneer as a payment method.

For this GoTranscript review, I used Payoneer as my payment method and the process is simple. Once you have earned a few dollars (or a lot of dollars, depending on how fast you work) you will have the option to request payment on Fridays for all work completed.

To get paid by GoTranscript with Payoneer, you will need to have the Global Payment Service feature activated. This is usually not enabled by default, so you might have to contact Payoneer to have the feature approved for your account.

You will be able to withdraw earnings for every job that has been rated by an editor. This can take a few days, so the sooner in the week you complete your work, the quicker your funds will be available to withdraw.

Withdrawing is simply a matter of setting your Payment Method to "Payoneer" in your GoTranscript account settings. When you're ready to get paid, you just send GoTranscript a Global Payment request using the form provided by Payoneer. Done.

Payoneer Review

Is Payoneer good for freelancers and affiliate marketers? Find out in my hands-on Payoneer debit card review.

Payoneer ReviewIn this Payoneer review I will explain how the Payoneer Prepaid Debit Card works and give my honest feedback, based on personal experience with Payoneer over the course of one year.

We'll cover questions on how it works, what Payoneer's fees are, and other important things you should know.

Then I'll let you in on why you need Payoneer in your life.

If you, like me, are an affiliate marketer or freelancer, you've got enough to do right now, so let’s get on with it.

Note: this review has been updated to reflect Payoneer info and fees for 2017.

What is the Payoneer MasterCard Debit Card?

Payoneer Debit Card

Payoneer are ‘pioneers’ in the global payment processor sector and there is no easy comparison to be made between Payoneer and other payment services.

Online payment options such as PayPal and Skrill do well to help merchants but only Payoneer focuses on the needs of freelancers and digital marketers. If you make money online, Payoneer can help you get payments easier and faster.

To save you time figuring it out, here's what they can do for you.

Overview: what is Payoneer?

Payoneer is a global payment processor which offers a safe payment solution for international freelancers, affiliate marketers, and anyone who needs to receive international payments in their home country.

Your Payoneer prepaid MasterCard card account works like any other MasterCard prepaid debit card that you can get at a local bank branch, but it is not only a local debit card account. It's an international one, too.

In other words, you can get paid from anywhere in the world and use your cash locally.

Following is a quick summary of how the Payoneer card works.

What do you get with the Payoneer MasterCard debit card?

  1. You get a free MasterCard prepaid debit card.

  2. And an online account linked to your Payoneer MasterCard card so you can:

    • View your balance and transaction history.

    • Manage your settings and personal details.

How can you use it?

Receiving card payments from clients: You can receive credit/debit card payments from anyone with Visa or MasterCard, from anywhere in the world. This service comes with a small transaction fee and the maximum amount you can receive from a single credit card payment is $1000.

  • Receiving affiliate commissions via Direct Deposit: You can receive Direct Deposit (ACH, SEPA, or BACS) payments from US, European, and UK based companies through Payoneer’s Global Payment Service. The transaction fee for using the Global Payment Service is 1% of the total amount transferred. You’ll get paid directly to your card, rather than having to wait for an international check to arrive in the mail.

  • Receiving freelance & affiliate earnings for direct withdrawal: You can receive online payments in US Dollars from Payoneer-approved partners (for example: Elance / oDesk AKA Upwork, Fiverr, Envato, 99designs, and many more). Receiving payments this way is free for most partner companies and takes two days to load, although you can also pay an extra $2.50 if you need the cash within 1-2 hours.

  • Spending your earnings: You can pay for goods and services online as well as in brick-and-mortar stores. It has the convenience of a credit card for online payments, with the beauty of a prepaid debit card since you cannot spend more money than you have in your account - i.e. you can't get into debt! There is no extra charge added to your purchases when you use your Payoneer card at a point-of-sale machine in a store or online. The total daily spending limit is $5,000 ($2,500 for in-store or online purchases, plus $2,500 in ATM withdrawals).

  • Withdrawing cash in your local currency: You can withdraw cash in your own currency from any ATM with the MasterCard logo visible on it – there are more than 1 million of these ATMs worldwide. The fee for a standard ATM cash withdrawal is around $3. This fee might sting a bit, but it helps me keep disciplined with my spending habits so I don't mind it too much.

If you don’t have an account with Payoneer yet, you should sign up for your Payoneer card directly from the Payoneer website. The yearly card fee is $29.95, which is deducted from your balance automatically so you don't have to remember to renew it.

There are no monthly maintenance fees when you sign up for your card via Payoneer's website using the link above. The yearly card fee is all you have to pay to keep your account active.

You won't need to pay the yearly fee upfront before getting your card because Payoneer only deducts the fee once a year when your balance is above $29.95.

Payoneer does provide a few other services such as Global Bank Transfers and the Global Payment Service. However, I will not be covering these in this review as I do not use the Global Bank Transfer Service and have only recently been approved for the Global Payment Service.

Once I have more experience with the Global Payment Service I may write another review detailing how I have found it.

[UPDATE: I just received my first Direct Deposit payment from Amazon Associates using Payoneer's Global Payment Service. Everything came through without a hitch and I'm smiling from ear to ear!]

My payoneer experience: one year and counting

Still reading this far? Good job. You probably want to know if Payoneer is any good, or maybe you would just like to know “how legit” they are.

To answer that, let me give you my short story of why I started using Payoneer.

A while ago I was unemployed and having no luck finding a job in my local area south of the equator. I mused about the possibility of using my skills online as a freelance writer – but my main obstacle, of course, was getting paid.

PayPal wasn’t an option because until recently there was no way to withdraw PayPal funds in my country. Nevertheless, I was sure there had to be a way, and after many weeks of hitting dead-ends, I finally found Payoneer.

Fast forward through a fruitful year of freelancing and dabbling in affiliate marketing... I’m still using my Payoneer card, and every day I am thankful for the freedom it gives me to earn money no matter where I am.

Mostly, at home in my pyjamas sipping coffee.

How Payoneer makes me feel

I use my card mainly for receiving freelance earnings on Elance / Upwork and affiliate commissions (e.g. Amazon, ShareASale, LinkShare), and I have been highly impressed with Payoneer as a company and its international debit card service.

My personal concern when signing up with Payoneer was how long the payments would take to clear, but as it turns out I was worrying for no reason. I have never had a problem with my payments coming through; they have been loaded into my account within the promised two-day waiting period each and every time.

As for paying for things with my Payoneer card, I’ve yet to come across a checkout method that prevented me from purchasing – i.e. it just works. I’ve bought goods online at both local and online retailers with no problems, and it's as easy as a credit card transaction.

My general experience of the support team over email has been a pleasant one. I can't vouch for the live chat support because I've never used it and I prefer email when dealing with official matters.

Whenever I have a question regarding the service or my account, I search the Payoneer forum and usually find that my question has already been answered, straightforwardly and in sufficient detail, by one of their community managers or support representatives.

With that said, if you’re an online freelancer, content producer, or affiliate marketer looking for a better alternative to PayPal for getting paid over the internet… This is it.

Verdict: 100% awesome and highly recommended.

Payoneer Fees vs. Paypal Fees in 2017 (Now Updated)

Both Payoneer and PayPal have their own individual set of fees that set them apart from each other. The Payoneer card fees are mostly fixed, while PayPal's fees can be more percentage-based.

PayPal Fees

This can be a good thing in different ways. It all depends on your payment needs and circumstances. Nonetheless, fees are what they are and you have to pay them if you want to use your money.

PayPal transactions are always free whenever you buy something or send money to someone in the United States. PayPal is also free of charge when it comes to transferring money in the United States whenever it is done from a bank account or existing PayPal balance.

Now if money needs to be sent abroad to family, friends, or businesses, PayPal will charge 2.9% of the total balance that is sent plus 0.30 cents USD per transaction that is sent. PayPal Merchant Fees can vary and are usually charged on a monthly basis.

If you get a PayPal Standard Account, there are no monthly fees. PayPal Payments Advanced charges $5 per month and PayPal Payments Pro charges $30 per month in fees.

When you receive payments for goods or services with PayPal, they charge 2.9% (plus 0.30 USD) as a standard rate. If your monthly payments are over $3,000 then you can get a discounted fee as low as 2.4%.

Payoneer Card Fees

Payoneer is also fee-based and the fees do vary between certain countries (non-standard and slightly higher fees apply to countries such as India - similar restrictions apply to PayPal, however).

An ATM cash withdrawal charge is $2.75, no matter where in the world you are withdrawing from. If an ATM withdrawal or Point-of-Sale transaction is declined, the charge is $1.

If you sign up with Payoneer directly - that is, not through a partner such as Upwork or Fiverr - there is an annual fee of $29.95 for use of the card, with no monthly fees attached.

When paying for goods or services with your Payoneer prepaid MasterCard debit card at a Point-of-Sale machine, there is no charge or fee - it simply deducts the amount you paid from your card balance.

If you are using Payoneer in conjunction with a Payoneer Partner (Upwork, 99designs, and many more), you will be able to receive payments from that partner company with no extra card fees beyond the annual fee.

Withdrawing funds from these companies with Payoneer as payment method is free if you don't mind waiting 2 business days. For $2.50 extra, you have the option to withdraw your earnings within 2 hours.

When you want to receive a credit card payment from a client, the fee is a fixed 3% of the total payment.

In the event that you lose your Payoneer card, you can order a replacement card for $12.95.

Why Payoneer?

Before knowing why people, particularly those who love to engage in online transactions, should use Payoneer, it is only fitting to know first what Payoneer is. Payoneer is similar to PayPal and Skrill in the sense that it is a payment processor used internationally. The service guarantees secure, safe, fast, and convenient online payment transactions for less. This service is a hit among international freelancers and even for local netizens who get their income online.
Click here to sign up for your Payoneer card and get your $25 referral bonus (after you reach $100 in received payments).

How does Payoneer work?

Payoneer account holders automatically get a prepaid MasterCard, which functions like any other prepaid debit card with the MasterCard branding. Moreover, an account holder also gets an online card account connected to the MasterCard. The online account can be used by account holders to view their account balance and the history of their transactions. They can also manage their account and personal details on the online account.
So, how can account holders use the Payoneer MasterCard debit card? They can receive payments from anyone who also has a Visa or MasterCard account, and that includes anyone from any part of the world. This service does come with a processing fee, though. This should not be surprising since other payment processors also charge fees for their services. With Payoneer, a single credit card payment has a maximum load amount of $1,000.

Payoneer and PayPal verification

Payoneer works as well for those who want to verify their PayPal accounts, but do not have a bank account or credit card. Since PayPal does not issue cards to users outside the US, but at the same time requires all account holders to verify their account, having a Payoneer account (with the MasterCard debit card) is a very convenient option.

ACH/Direct Deposits for commissions, royalties, and online payouts from US companies

Payoneer also provides convenience as account holders can receive direct deposit payments from companies like Amazon and PayPal. This has been made possible through the US Payment Service feature of Payoneer.
As with the other services, Payoneer charges a reasonable transfer fee of 1% of the total amount received. On the other hand, account holders can also get online payments from partners of Payoneer like oDesk and Elance. This transfer can be done for free and takes at most a couple of days to execute. Payoneer account holders who want to expedite the transfer and receive their money within three hours maximum after the request will be charged $2.50.

Spending and withdrawals with Payoneer

As for the Payoneer card, as great as it is for online transactions, it can also be used in brick-and-mortar shops that accept MasterCard. Cash withdrawals can be done anywhere and account holders can receive amounts in local currency through ATMs, with a $3 ATM cash withdrawal transaction fee.
The global acceptance of the Payoneer MasterCard card and the flexibility of the currency (either US dollar or local currency with automatic exchange) are plus points for Payoneer. Moreover, the convenience and security of transfers from PayPal and other major US partners make it a must-have for anyone earning money online.
